Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G
Desktop Computer Review

Looking for a good brand name desktop computer system? Well, the Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G is one great machine to consider. The VA11G is a great. It has an excellent design, comes with Windows XP Media Center Edition, and has an amazing array of media card slots.

Some quirks though - the VAIO's front panel has controls for brightness and for turning off the LCD monitor when all you want to do might be to listen to some music. There's nothing for changing the channel or volume.

Other than that, this desktop is top-notch and is a highly recommended buy.

Let's take a quick look at the salient features of this desktop system and see if it is the dream machine you've been looking for.

The Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G desktop computer

CPU and Memory

The Sony VAIO VA11G comes with a 3.2-GHz Intel Pentium 4 640 processor and 1 GB of SDRAM. Throw anything you want at it - the latest 3D games, video editing or number-crunching applications - it processes them with aplomb.

If you want to further drive up the power, the machine can be configured with practically any high-end Pentium processor, e.g. the Intel 955 Extreme Edition CPU.

Case

The Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G computer case has a color scheme similar to that Sony's silver LCD TV panels. It looks really good and fits right into a classy, modern living room.

Graphics

The Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G comes with an ATI Radeon x700 graphics card. This card has good best-in-class antialiasing, 3D normal map compression and a razor-sharp video signal output. I think it is especially good for playing real-time strategy games and the like.

Data Storage

The two 160GB SATA hard drives included in the Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G give you a whopping amount of storage space. This is just as well, since the VGC-VA11G is designed to record lots of TV programming and hold heaps of digital files. I think you will be throwing a lot of media files at it before it can run out of space.

Other Components

The Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G has USB, FireWire/i.Link, and cable-TV jacks that are better-situated than they were on the previous versions. The ports are now easily accessible and very user-friendly.

Shortcomings

The VAIO's front panel has controls for brightness and for turning off the LCD monitor when all you want to do is listen to music, but nothing for changing the channel or volume. This is pretty bad, since just about all TVs have these controls on the front panel or on the top.

Conclusion

The Sony VAIO VGC-VA11G is a monster of a machine and truly takes media center PCs to the next level. Buy this machine and you will be playing games, watching TV and DVDs in a whole new way.
