Building and fixing up my own personal computers has been a hobby of mine
since 1985. I learnt a lot about computers through playing computer games :) In
the old days, when you had a computer game that simply did not work, you learnt
the hard way to tweak your PC under it did.
My first computer was gift from a family friend - an old Apple II computer. I
remember I tore that machine apart! I was in my early teens and I could not stop
trying out different programs and investigating how and why the Apple II worked
the way it did.
I swtiched to IBM PCs in 1987 with a 80286 machine. Boy was that an exciting
feeling then (even with a small crummy 40MB hard disk). I tweaked the PC so I
could play games. I learnt how to install DOS and Windows 3.1 - which were huge
at that time.
Next computer - a 80486 machine in 1992. The upgrade was long overdue - I
essentially skipped the 80386 machine. That was when I got my first CD-ROM -
playing the 7th Guest from Trilobyte. That CD-ROM drive cost me about $600 then!
A lousy 2X read speed at that.
Fast forward to 1995 when I upgraded to a Pentium 75 MHz machine. Wow. That
period was when Windows 95 was release - everyone was talking about it. Those
were the times I spent playing Myst, Wing Commander, X-Wing while in university.
I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D over a measly modem line at 28.8 kbps. But boy
was it fun.
I went on to a Pentium II 333 MHz machine in 1997 - it had a ChainTech
motherboard (from Taiwan) I think. I spent many, many nights playing Quake with
that machine. I also bought my first HP Laserjet (the 5L model I think) for
working on my school reports.
In 2000, I upgraded (again!) to a Pentium III 550 MHz machine. This was a
top-of-the-line gaming machine at the time - with a Orchid Righteous 3D video
card, 128MB RAM and a ABIT motherboard. I also switched to broadband - and never
went back to a modem line again :)
Well, in 2002, yep, you guessed it - I upgraded again to a AMD Athlon XP 1800+
machine with a MSI motherboard and 512MB RAM. I threw in a 17 inch monitor,
cable modem, 32X Aopen CD-RW, Soundblaster Live! 5.1 sound card, Leadtek Winfast
GeForce 4 video card, a good pair of MidiLand speakers. My machine still screams
so I'm not thinking of upgrading anytime soon :)
Guess I must have plonked down thousands and thousands of dollars on my hobby
eh? But I'd do it all over again if given a chance. I really enjoy tearing
computers apart - the excitement of waiting for that next piece of hardware,
it's indescribable.
Well, enough of me and my computers. This web site was constructed in Mar 2003
and will serve as a platform for me to share my know-how about building
computers.
I hope you'll enjoy my site and find something useful out of it!
