The Computer Builder #041: Your Computer's Operating System
March 17, 2009

Welcome to this edition of The Computer Builder. In this issue, we'll be talking about the operating system and also how to access the 'secret' virtual keyboard in Windows Vista.

Term Of The Week

Operating System - The operating system is the most essential piece of software in your computer. You need it as a foundation from which you run applications and games. Most computers these days run the Windows Vista or Windows XP operating system - with older versions of Windows like Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 98, etc. almost becoming obsolete. Some computer enthusiasts also like to run the Linux operating system due to its lightweight and super stable performance. The most popular Linux operating system for the home user is currently the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

Tip Of The Week

Windows Vista has a neat feature - it comes with a virtual keyboard. If you somehow lose your real, physical keyboard, you can access this virtual one. Here's how - Key in 'OSK' into the Start menu's Search field. Hit enter to bring up the on-screen keyboard and then just use your mouse to key in data.

Buy Computer Memory Online

If you plan to invest in more computer memory, you need to know the correct RAM module to select. One of my favorite sites for buying computer memory is Crucial.com. This online store offers a plethora of memory products and they give your money back if memory upgrades are not compatible with your system. Definitely worth a visit.
