Happy
New Year to one and all! Well, it's been an interesting year here.
Since the website was re-launched in May 2005, we've seen a good increase in traffic
volume. We're hitting about 200 visitors a day, which is very healthy indeed.
Resolutions for 2006? Well, to bring you more tips and tricks on building
computers, of
course. I'm also thinking of launching a little book to consolidate all the tips
given in the website. What do you guys think? Suggestions are welcome -
just drop me a
note. Till then, have a great year ahead!

How To Set Up a File Server with an Old PC
Question: I have an old computer with a
P4 1.8 GHz CPU. I have 3 HDDs that total
250 GB. I have a linksys router and plenty of cable. How do I use this old PC as
a file server on the home network (which has one other computer)? I only have
one monitor available.
Anonymous, United States
Answer: I'd think there are two ways to do
this. One is to get a KVM Switch
(a simple two port version) which runs about
$40. You can then share with two computers on one monitor with a flick of the
switch. If you're running Windows XP on both PCs, you can also use
Remote Desktop which allows you to control Desktop A from Desktop B.

Upgrade Your Computer Skills with This Video
If you want to learn how to build your own computer or troubleshoot general PC problems, you may want to check out this computer training video.
Besides showing you the exact steps for installing new hardware components, this video provides important tips for repairing and upgrading your PC.
These tips include little gems like how to create boot disks, configure your BIOs or format a hard drive.
Are you in the market for an operating system for that brand new PC?
Well, here's a good tip. You can save more than 50 percent by purchasing the OEM
(original equipment manufacturer) version of the Windows operating system and of
major software such as Microsoft Office.
Local computer stores that specialize in building systems and online retailers
such as TC Computers and TigerDirect.com
can sell you
OEM software, provided you purchase a piece of hardware along with it. The
downside is that you won't get any free tech support on OEM products from
Microsoft. If you like, of course, you can opt for an alternative, such as
Linux.
Registry Mechanic
is an advanced registry cleaner for Windows that allows you to safely scan,
clean, and repair registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks. With a few
easy steps, Registry Mechanic will scan your entire registry for any invalid
entries and provide a list of the errors found. You can choose to clean each
item or automatically repair them all after making a backup.
